30 round magazines are considered standard capacity. Please change the name to reflect this fact. Thanks.
Why might a ABS magazine split along the back in the follower guide corner. It was printed on it side. Would it be less likely to split if printed standing up?
Where’s a good place to get the springs?
Wolff gunsprings comes to mind. We might sell them ourselves…
Which stock # works for these?
Part number is 60901. The others under magazine springs are for different packs or quantities.
It helps to read!
Actually, it’s 60905. 60901 is for the 20 rnd magazines. I was apparently on a different page when I looked yesterday, but the page I went to today, BAM there they were.
http://www.thehomegunsmith.com/ has .pdf files that include making magazines, including making springs out of piano wire.
http://www.cmmginc.com/product_p/55afd9e.htm
You can wind your own around a little block of wood. Not as good as the real deal, but a serviceable DIY solution.
20 gauge spring wire would be a good starting point.
make them with guitar string on a homemade mandrel (created using actual spring as a guide)…heat treat, etc.
chrome silicon wire would be better..
44mag.com has rebuild kits
This looks very interesting, especially with those trying to ban these types of magazines. If it could work decently…
BTW: found a cheaper place than Wolff Gunsprings at Brownells. 10 for $20. http://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifle-magazines/magazine-parts/magazine-springs/ar-15-m16-high-capacity-magazine-springs-prod41777.aspx?ttver=2
Yea but those are all out of stock at the moment…
True. Not sure what their time to in stock will be, but for one or two I’d prolly go for wolff gunsprings, but if you were going to make a bunch I’d prolly get ‘em from Brownell’s. Once you have the mag (minus spring) it’s still a 30rnd mag and grandfathered…assuming any ban as a grand fathering….and spring later. Brownel’s also has a nice discount for C&R FFL’s
How much stress is acted on a magazine? Can it be printed with ABS or polycarbonate plastics? I assume PLA would be too weak?
PLA is too stiff. Feed lips would crack extremely fast.
What about ABS? Would that work?
As a person who has printed this in ABS, sorta. Design for both 10 and 30rd need to be tweaked a bit.
Do you mean the design needs to be tweaked for ABS or in general? My printer I ordered is hopefully going to be here in April. Would to try to print a bunch as soon as it arrives
Thanks for those replies – I will be buying a printrbot (I think the LC version) which will print ABS and PLA. It’s all I can afford right now, and even if magazines aren’t that “good”, they might make good backup magazines for SHTF moments, or I need to toss some to some friends.
Or should I hold on to my cash and wait (hope) until 3D printers come down in price before the gov’t bans them, too?
Yeah PLA is stiff and brittle like acrylic but I’m gonna try one anyway.

Any chance you guys are working on 20 mags? Also, can you share the editable files so we can make our own adjustments too? Thanks. Keep up the awesome work!
Please start working on Glock Mags. 17 rounders can’t be found here any more at least not for less than 60 bucks.

Question-
Why not build an extender that you could fix onto the bottom of a 10 round magazine with epoxy?
The floor plate retaining tabs would need to be cut off, but the design has some advantages:
- Factory metal feed lips
- Perfect mag-well fit.
- Faster print time.
- Factory follower can be used.
Thinking through it, I would eliminate the floor plate and just epoxy the extender onto the bottom of the factory 10 round mag with the follower and spring pre-inserted, curing overnight with a couple of clamps holding them together.
That’s a cool idea
This is an awesome idea!

Is there a sertain type of 3d printer one would need? or will any of them do it?
When is someone going to try an AK47 magazine? Would it be possible for me to draw one up and someone to make it for testing?
Your drawing would have to be pretty accurate down to pretty small details to work. I believe some of the tolerances would need to be <1mm to be accurate enough to likely work.

Magpul PMAGs sell like hotcakes and are very hard to find right now. This appears to be a very promising alternative. How much does it cost in feedstock to fabricate each magazine?
Yea. I’d love to be able to print myself some 20rd and 30rd PMAGS…

Ok question: If these magazines only last a certain amount of rounds before failure, could a spring-wrapper be made that one could wrap wire around that could give an approximately similar amount of rounds for its lifetime, too? Thereby eliminating the need to have to buy special springs, and being able to use easily obtained wire (like from a tractor-supply store, for instance)?
What is needed to use the “Certificate Trust List” files…? Or are they not used by the 3D printer…? I’m just catching on to this…
Open your CAD program, and then browse to the CAD file and open it.
Any recommendations on a good 3d printer to buy and use for this? https://www.google.com/search?q=3d+printer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#q=3d+printer&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=9JK&tbo=u&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=univ&tbm=shop&sa=X&ei=Akr3ULD_OYHnqgGzrYCIBg&ved=0CFMQsxg&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.41018144,d.aWM&fp=2b97a703ed91ae4a&biw=1440&bih=680

When I try to print on a Makerbot Replicator it keeps starting just a bit too high every time. But when I try a different file of mine it works just fine. Any reason these files would print incorrectly on a makerbot replicator like that?
Solidworks has issues with making STLs which I assume these guys used to generate their STLs. Just run them through Netfabb or meshlab and repair and you should be good to go.

Check this http://defcad.org/faqhelp/ and maybe try FreeCAD where you open the file within the program.

If one of us could somehow effectively produce a way to use a system like:
http://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifle-magazines/magazines/ar15-m16-l5-advanced-warfighter-magazines-prod44810.aspx?ttver=2&avs|Action%20Type_1=Semi-Auto&avs|Cartridge_1=AKK_5xzzx56%20mm%20NATO
then we could modify the body design in a manner that would accept the addition of metal feed lips which would in turn produce better cycling, as well as greater reliability and strength.

When opening the file in solidworks, it just gives me a STL graphic. I can’t measure it and/or edit it like I could the last magazine you guys uploaded. Ideas? Is this intentional? I want to make another magazine coupler that fits the Cuomo.

How hard would it be for you to UPSIZE this to fit an AR10 in 7.62x51mm/Winchester 308?
I would be VERY interested in getting such a file!.
Also…Can you provide files in AutoCAD DWG format (version 2004 prefered but can convert 2008 and 2012).
Still looking for the AR10 size 25-30 round mag and have files in .DWG format for AutoCAD…..Anyone???

Looks like the v3 follower does not fit the v3 mag. But it seems to be the v2 follower STL file. Same timestamp. Any chance this can be corrected?
Please note this design will also allow for the standard rectangular spring or a 23/32 inch / 18.263 mm utility compression spring found at most hardware stores. More testing needed on the round compression spring however.
So. Just sliced and tried printing this and it is setup in a “feed-lips” down orientation. This results in it trying to print the rest of the magazine beyond the feed lips with nothing below it… Is it possible to flip the thing over and print from the baseplate side up?

I have tried to download the MegaPack several times and it always gets to 224mb then the data flow stops. Its not on my end since I have tried 4-5 times now and it always happens at 224mb.

Yeah I downloaded the full mega pack and the v4.4 mag file inside is older than the previous one I downloaded. Can we get a straight download for the latest mag file? I have been keeping up with this and testing them direct in my rifle and want to keep in step with this. Thanks.
It is not older than the previous version. Did you try here? http://defcad.org/ar-15-magazine-30-round-mag/
It is, in fact, older. I just downloaded the mega pack for a 2nd time. The 30rd v4.4 zip (though dated 2/25) has parts dated 2/9 and 1/30. Whereas the v4.3 that I previously downloaded has STL files dated 2/15 and 2/19.
That is on purpose.
I suppose then the v4.4 is “newer” than the 4.3 even though it is dated the same as my version 3 files? Perhaps a changelog would help keep us informed of developments with the files so we can understand the reasoning. Just a thought.
Thanks for clarifying. I just didn’t want to waste the time and material to build a magazine that was the same as my previous download.
You are right, a change-log is needed. We shall include it in our future releases.

hey guys, i’m new to this whole 3d printing, thing, but figured it was time to give it a try. I’m wondering though, how do i set this mag up to print? I’ve tried with the “rafts and supports” on, for the over hangs, but that just made the entire thing pretty much solid. any ideas how to handle the over hangs? thanks gang.
I’m having the same issues, I cannot open the files in Slic3r. Having same issue as DFarms
I flip it upside down to print. Problem solved.
Are you using Slic3r to open the file? I cannot get Slic3r to see it properly and when open up in solidworks or netfabb it doesnt measure properly.
Any ideas?
Corrupted STL File ?
The DefDist AR-15 Cuomo 30 round magazine v4.5 ZIP file (http://defcad.org/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=166) seems to have a corrupted file per GLC_Player:
DefDist_Cuomo_AR15_30_Mag_Follower.stl
Not sure why GLC_Player could not load the file. Tried FreeCAD and was able to load the file and to convert the file to an STL file that GLC_Player could successfully read. Strange …
how can the government restrict this, this is not a weapon and its not illegal to have cad drawings of anything. we are now living in a police state.
If you still want to download this… click the link that “phred” posted on May 6th, 2013. It works.
Any body have a Torrent link to this file ?
